Fake peer review hits RSC journals

Journals of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) — which alsopublishes Chemistry World — have today retracted five papers due to acompromised peer review process. Rigged peer review usually happens when researchers, or thirdparty companies acting on their part, submit false email addresses forpotential peer reviewers they suggest during the manuscript submissionprocess. Referee reports received from these email addresses typicallyoffer concise and favourable feedback on the studies being reviewed. In the present case, all the retraction notices1,2,3,4,5 mentionan investigation that identified at least one such fake referee reportfor each of the five papers. One author was responsible for the ethical misconduct across allthree affected journals, Jamie Humphrey, publisher at the RSC, said ina statement. ‘This author has submitted and published other papers inour journals but as a result of our investigation we are confidentthat it is only the five published papers mentioned above that havebeen affected.’ Zhiwen Chen, a professor in the school of environmental andchemical engineering at Shanghai University in China, is an author onall five retracted papers. Chen told Chemistry World: ‘We have noexperimental data fraud and plagiarism, only my negligence, leading tothe incomplete peer review process.’ He added that he plans toresubmit the papers for peer review and publication once they areretracted. ‘In line with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines,we have been in contact with the author and their institution,’Humphrey added. ‘As the true identity of the reviewers cannot beidentified we have come to the conclusion that all five publishedpapers affected should be retracted.’ Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics (PCCP) has pulled threepapers6,7,8 while Chemical Communications9and Nanoscale10haveretracted one each. According to Web of Science, the PCCP papers haveso far been cited by one, five and eight other papers, respectively, while the Chemical Communications study and the Nanoscale review haveaccumulated three citations each. Fake peer review is not new: around 500 manuscripts were pulledfrom the scholarly literature for problems with peer review. And morethan half of these papers were authored by researchers at Chineseinstitutions, according to a recent analysis by Quartz. One high-profile scandal in April this year saw publishing giantSpringer Nature pull 107 papers from the journalTumour Biology due tofabricated peer review. The journal has since moved to anotherpublisher, SAGE. In response to the Tumour Biology scandal, the Chinese governmentannounced on 14 June that it plans to cancel research grants ofscientists involved in peer review fraud. Last month, the Chinesegovernment announced that 486 researchers were found guilty ofmisconduct (out of 521 originally implicated). Out of those, 102authors were found to be mainly responsible and 70 secondarily culpable, while 314 were said to have been guilty of negligence despite notconducting any fraud themselves. ‘By retracting these articles, we are demonstrating that theRoyal Society of Chemistry is intolerant to such practice,’ Humphreysaid. ‘We also acknowledge that this should not have happened and weare conducting a review to improve our processes and reduce the riskof a similar situation happening again.’ The author of this article worked as a full time staff writer forRetraction Watch from January 2016 to January 2017 References 1 A Simpson, Phys.
